Getting Started in Physics

Physics - The Fundamental Science

BLOCK #1: Introduction to Physics

Welcome to the wonderful world of physics!

Everywhere you look, everything you sense... it's all physics. Physics not only looks at the world, but also attempts to explain the things that happen. Whether by diagrams, explanations or mathematics, physicists do their best to understand and clarify how things happen.

How this course works.

The essential content of this course will be learned by watching a series of videos initially produced as a review course for the New York State Regents exam in physics. Class work will be focused on questions from those exams. Content in this course aligns with the Common Core concepts as well as the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards).

You should have received a test packet and Reference Tables for use in the course. If not, you may download them here. Each lesson will also have a Student Response Sheet to hand in your work for the block.

What is Physics?

This first video is a good overview of some of the main concepts of physics.

Physics is Quantitative

Don't let this scare you, but one of the main components of physics is that we measure things. Not only do we measure different characteristics of a system, but we then analyze those events using both mathematical formulas and graphical analysis.

The Metric system is the standard in science. Thus, the Metric system will be used exclusively in this course.

Watch the following video to reacquaint yourself with this powerful measuring system.
